In Holualoa, coffee isn’t just a booming industry. It’s also a favorite pastime for the residents who call this lovely region home and the visitors who stay at the renowned Holualoa Inn. (Stop by just to witness the inn’s sweeping views of the island.) Holuakoa Coffee Shack epitomizes Holualoa’s dedication to preserving the town’s past by serving the freshest Kona roasts from a “shack” that dates back over a century. Savor a latte under their monkeypod tree while trying to decide between a pineapple mango malasada, a slice of pumpkin bread with maple cream cheese, or an ube–or purple yam–donut. (Or indulge in all three.) For special occasions, take a quick and effortless drive to La Bourgogne. As one of the few French restaurants on the Big Island, this intimate eatery offers a Prix fix menu comprised of three luscious courses; sherry-splashed lobster bisque, duck cassoulet with spicy white beans and herbs, and pot de creme with Frangelico liqueur and whipped cream is just an example of the fine fare La Bourgogne offers.

 

Once you’re well-caffeinated and with a pep in your step, holoholo (or meander) through the town’s galleries and boutiques. At Ipu Arts Plus, you’ll find handcrafted ipu–or musical gourds, which are frequently featured in hula–with stunning designs, while Glyph Art Gallery exhibits astounding works in various mediums from a carefully curated roster of Hawaii-based artists. If you happen to be in the area on a Wednesday, be sure to pause at Sundog Bread’s pop-up in front of the gallery for delicious organic pastries and warm-from-the-oven sourdough bread.

 

 

Holualoa’s commitment to its loving ohana is on full display at their First Friday After Dark, a monthly community event that presents wonderful live music, grab-and-go eats made with fresh, local ingredients, and the opportunity to meet local artists and like-minded spirits. Every November, the town presents its annual Coffee & Art Stroll, when residents from across the island and visitors from around the globe explore Holualoa’s distinguished art scene and sample coffee harvested by local farmers. Greet the holiday scene every December at Holualoa Village’s Music & Light Festival, when the village’s Christmas tree is gorgeously illuminated, Santa pays a visit to children, and live music serenades the street party. 

 

And when you get the urge to escape the cooler temps for a day of swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling at the beach? Magic Sands at La’aloa Beach is just down the slope.
